Welcome to Torrox

Welcome to Torrox The municipality of Torrox lies 44 kilometres east of Málaga between Vélez-Málaga and Nerja and, protected by the Sierra Almijara and Tejeda mountains, it has a very temperate climate.

In fact, Torrox is widely accredited as having ‘the best climate in Europe’.

Torrox Costa is a beach resort and includes the impressive Ferrara Playa, recipient of the prestigious EU Blue Flag, as well as Roman ruins and a lighthouse.

Torrox Pueblo, four kilometres inland, is a village of white-washed houses nestling on the hillside and with a character all its own.

The municipality of Torrox is on the Costa del Sol in the Axarquia district of Málaga province in the autonomous region of Andalucia.

Musical treat at Venta Madrid

A musical treat on Friday September 3rd at Venta Madrid with singer Nito Inza and guitarists Carlos Gutiérrez and Manuel Muñóz will be singing and playing some great pieces from the likes of Paco de Lucia and Tomatito.

Alegrias, fandangos, soleares and boleros are all on the menu, as are some great typical Andalucian tapas. The music starts at around 20:30.

Damage to Ferrara Playa

Storms during the past couple of days have once again had a dramatic effect on Ferrara Playa beach, the eastern end now having a one metre high ‘step’ due to the sands being washed away.

The Council is, for the umpteenth time, requesting the Department of Coasts to initiate a project to stabilise the beach through the construction of a series of breakwaters or jetties to prevent this alarmingly regular occurrence.

Hotel owners, swimmers, tourists, residents and local businesses have all complained about the situation but the Department of Coasts appears to still be content to carry out the more expensive sand replenishment option every time there is bad weather rather than implement a permanent solution.

This situation is, of course, not unique as many coastal municipalities face the same problems every time the weather changes.

Roman ruins

Local residents have denounced the lamentable state of the Roman ruins near El Faro with much of the site, including the old furnaces, covered in all types of rubbish.

The area is the site of the 3rd Century Roman settlement of Clavicum where the furnaces used to produce a sort of fish paste called garum.

An interpretation centre is supposed to be being built in the area, with the Junta de Andalucia funding 70% of the €624,000 cost, but little or nothing has happened with this project for a long time.
