A lucky Torrox resident won €3,562,637.11 on the Bono Loto on Tuesday, the winning ticket having been sold in the Faro area of Torrox Costa.

Council aiming to reduce fuel bill by 25%

Torrox Council is hoping to save around 25% on its fuel bill, around €6,000, with the installation of ECO-CAR devices in its vehicles.

The Council has signed an agreement with the company Sky Water Green World Malaga, distributors of the ECO-CAR devices in Andalucia. These devices will also reduce pollutants being emitted from the vehicles and also reduce noise levels.

The ECO-CAR devices consist of a set of minerals which, when in contact with the fuel, act as inhibitors to, amongst others, magnetic, electric and static fields. New molecular properties are formed in the fuel and this leads to increased efficiency.

Over 2,000 illegal buildings in Torrox

An inventory of irregular housing in the Axarquia presented by the Junta de Andalucia in March 2011 lists some 12,760 illegal buildings, most of which could become legal on January 10th 2012 as announced by the president of the Junta de Andalucia, José Antonio Griñán. However, only 22 of the 31 municipalities submitted inventories and there are some important omissions.

The list does not include illegal buildings in the likes of Vélez-Málaga, Rincón de la Victoria, Nerja and Torrox or where legal proceedings are under way, such as in La Viñuela and Alcaucín.

The mayor of Torrox, Francisco Muñoz, estimates that there in excess of 2,000 illegal buildings in the municipality and he is trying to set up an inventory system so that many of these can benefit from the security to be afforded by the ‘legalisation’ decree on January 10th.

Drugs seized near El Faro

National Police arrested 13 people as they were in the process of unloading 1,560 kilos of hashish from a small inflatable boat near Torrox Costa lighthouse.

Police spotted a six metre inflatable boat with three people on board enter a cove near the lighthouse. They were then joined by ten others who formed a human chain to unload the boat.

Three more people thought to be connected with the drugs shipment were later arrested on their way from Torrox to Málaga, one member of the smuggling organisation was arrested in Cártama following a raid on his home and another four were subsequently detained for their connections to the gang.

The total number of detainees has now reached twenty-one, with nineteen being Spanish nationals.

IU demands fairer purchasing policy

The IU is demanding that the PSOE government be a little fairer to local businesses when it comes to purchasing materials. Currently, all purchases of building materials used by the Council are made at one of two local companies.

41,000 speeding drivers in Torrox tunnel

Over 41,000 people have apparently been ‘caught’ by the radar trap in the Torrox tunnel since it began operating in January 2011, although not all have resulted in fines as the first three months of the year were designated a test period with drivers merely being warned.

The radar system operates day and night and takes photos of vehicles as they enter and exit the tunnel and calculates an average speed. Over 100 kph and it is a fine and points deducted from you licence.

The authorities point out that it is no use to change lanes, stop for a few seconds at the end of the tunnel or try to adopt other counter measures as these will not be effective.

The summer months were the busiest with 6,113 people being caught in July and 5,815 in August. In total, the figure of 41,000 represents 1.2% of traffic passing through the tunnel.

Bidding process for marina in Torrox could begin with a few months according to José Antonio Griñán

While attending the annual Migas Festival in Torrox at the weekend, the president of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán, not only took the opportunity to announce the legalisation on January 10th 2012 of illegally built homes in the province and region but also stated that the Junta already has the environmental impact study for the building of a marina in Torrox and that the tendering process is expected to begin within a few months.

The president said the necessary steps are already in progress and the marina will be tendered based on a formula of public and private ownership. The president said that he expected an ample number of bidders for the contract and speedy realisation of the project.

Nerja Council, who dispute that anything has been agreed relating to the proposed marina, has once again expressed doubts about the validity of statements currently being made, announcing that they smack of electioneering.
